Yellow-crested Manakin

The Yellow-crested Manakin is a Passeriforme of the family Pipridae.

Characteristics

It is 14 cm long. The male is dark olive above with a yellow crown patch (often concealed). It has a white throat above a dark olive band below which the breast is chestnut becoming paler below. The female is similar but has a grey rather than white throat and lacks the crown patch.

Food

It eats both insects and small fruits but is more insectivorous than most manakins.

Breeding

The male defends its breeding territory with pursuit flights and displays. Courtship includes bending forward with flared throat feathers and cocked and spread tail all being quivered for about a second.

Habits

Varia de incomum a localmente comum nos estratos inferior e médio de várzeas, na vegetação às margens de rios e florestas de galeria. Vive freqüentemente solitário, mas às vezes acompanha pequenos bandos mistos de aves.

Distribution

Amazônia brasileira ao norte do Rio Amazonas, nas bacias dos rios Negro e Branco (Amazonas e Roraima), com registros esparsos para leste até o baixo Rio Trombetas. Encontrado também na Venezuela e Colômbia.
